The magazine cover evaluation/annotation

Strengths of my magazine cover

The Strengths of my magazine cover are in my opinion the way I made the heading look by adding a respected and popular glamorous magazine title . I also liked how I took a look at an example of a Teen Vogue magazine cover and tried to include similiar conventions from these real covers, such as plugs and cover lines that would really be featured in a magazine like this  . Another strength was the coordination and scheme of colours (Black and purple) and that they complimented eachother and generally matched the image and personna of Melody's character. Also the image used has a professional and conventional aspect to it as it was taken in a studio, and with a professional camera and the artist has a cleaner and more restrained look compared to her normal appearence in music videos, photoshoots and albums.  I think the magazine cover included many impressive and creative details.

Weaknesses of my magazine cover

A weakness of my magazine cover was that I thought the content and cover lines/descriptions displayed on it was scarce and limited, I could of included on the cover a lot more information and make the cover look a lot more hectic and full like a real magazine would do.  I could’ve also blurred the background behind the artist to bring out and focus the image of the artist. The magazine cover could of also been improved by adding a date the magazine was released on the cover. Adding to this I could of inserted a barcode to the cover and a price for the magazine to increase the legitimacy of the magazine cover.

This is an additional piece of work I created and constructed. If my artist was to be featured on a magazine cover.

My magazine advert evaluation/annotation

The colours used on the magazine cover were chosen to link directly to the character and match her image and lifestyle. She is  a constant user and statement of dark and gothic colours, the uses of black and purple relates directly to the fact that the lack of colour connotes mystery and deep buried fear in her.

I also use brighter colours in some sections of the magazine advert such as the lighter purple and bright pink . I chose to also include these brighter colours to suggest and symbolise the artist has a softer and more positive side, and this is highlighted through the contrast of dark and more subtle colours compared to the lighter and 'happier colours'

The image of the artist is indeed very glamorous and pretty, by presenting her in an official studio and having applied makeup by professionals and given a makeover generally.  Although her image is a lot more glamorous then her usual grunge alternative messy image, she still keeps her aspects of herself and her actual personal image like a black and tight fitted dress, her hair down and free, and dramatic and harsh black makeup around her eyes and her target audience or any audience will be able to recognise these remaining features of her and still relate to her and be a fan of her.

Also the token and recognisable facial expression and smirk she displays on the magazine advert can be easily recognised and appreciated by her fans who see her show this face constantly in her photo shoots and music videos.

I inserted text like release dates what will be included in the album, reviews, titles, the artist's name and the artist's website etc, because they are common and real conventions of real magazine adverts and appeal to any target audience you may have.

Along with this by adding a small thumbnail picture of the album advertised here it allows for audiences to become informed of what the album looks like and suggests and reveals more of the artist's unique and alternative deep personality and how these themes will be shown in her album

Additional details I added to the magazine advert was a star rating to further develop the facade that this magazine advert is real and enriched with detail and conventions

The addition of these conventions to the advert also heightens the artist's awareness and promotion and displays her image in a prestige and professional desirable light. It allows for the advert to seem exclusive and worthy for fans or an audience to be attracted to and research

Lastly the effects and alterations I chose to add to the main image of the artist further supports and expresses the artist's beauty and potential. The effect of the image being lighter and glowing further shows that the artist is in her prime and graceful and sexy in front of a camera. She is able to succeed her classy and effortless look of beauty compared to her usual darker grunge and more comfortable style and image

This is a page containing the detailed evaluation of my magazine advert and why I chose to contruct it in this way. Also additional work of a magazine cover  I made and the evaluation for this

These images when conducting photoshoots were deeply considered to be the image for the magazine advert, I was considering using these images because of the manipulated technique of Mise en scene I used. Mise en scene was considered when possibly using these images because of the various and grunge based unkept costumes/ outfits she is wearing. EG- the ripped frayed tights and alternative dark clothing, the cheap flannel shirts and the tight retro dresses. These costumes develop and represent her character and star image here as an artist, a token representation of the alternative edgy subgroup. I also considered using these images because of the location shown in these images and are suggestive towards the character's personna, this location of an eerie and creepy forest suggest she is also lost and complex and finds peace in the quiet, the location of the images also link directly to the digipack that is based in the same forest. Lastly mise en scene is an important aspect and focus in these shots that would be beneficial for the magazine advert, because of the straight and unrevealing expression the artist adopts. Her expression that is common across the music video and the digipack, is this motif blank and unrevealing expression with a suttle hint of an all knowing and mischevious smirk. I finally chose to use the above image as my final magazine advert image because of the more proffesional approach and presentation it displays, and is an actual photoshoot that was constructed for the artist. She is shown to not only be in an official studio as a famous artist, but also adotping an array of glamour and as a desirable artist with her seductive suttle smirk, tight black and gothic dress and defined smokey makeup.
