.A twist for the indie genre music videos is now a narrative- A story for the audience- able to compete with other genres and artist's and the vast and complex narratives in their videos- uses a sequence of images and video clips- Room for creativity and 'playing around' with shots and particular storylines and clips to present the band and artists for who they are (Narrative storylines also catch the audiences attention better and allow opportunity for a more personal and intimate relationship and interpretation of the band) Instead of only limiting the band and their personalities to a simple live performance

 

.Mise en scene is very important in indie music videos- They have a retro and individual look and can portray this through the set, props and costume and appearance.

.The sound of the indie music video- Sound is clearly one of the most important characteristics of the music video. The sound has to be clear and precise especially if the music video is of a live performance. Effects can be added onto the sound of the song in the music video like distortion, echo, increase the volume or decrease it in certain sections etc, possibly to represent different characters/ artists and their nature. Also to show different emotions and styles. Diagetic sound can be added either at the beginning of the music video added in section during the music video or at the end of the music video, to form and shape a story or narrative to the music video or to highlight a personal addition to the song directly from the artist or to underline something particular that audiences should focus on. EG- Lana del ray adding a speech at the end of her national anthem video. 

 

.Camera angles/ transitions-

Extreme close ups are the most common- Introduces and highlights the artist/character- Highlights the emotion they feel and highlights the song lyric they are singing if they are lip syncing. 

Full length/medium shots- Presents to the audience the artists/bands outfits and the setting they are in. Portrays and connotes more about the bands personality and style. The setting being shown so clearly is key as it implies to audiences the message and suggestions of the video and links to the songs lyrics and impression. The indie band/artist may also be an icon and be recognised or appreciated for their style which audiences can immatate or find inspiration from. 

Tilts/panning- Helps tell and present the music videos narrative- By showing the full set/setting and the whole nature of the character and the videos enviroment.  

 

.Editing of the music video

Editing and the opportunity to edit is very important when producing a music video

Editing the video to have an old fashioned/sepia effect- Most music videos possess some sort of effect or even special effects to create a smoother and more complex interesting sequence

 

Either a slow or fast cutting sequence- To match or add to the pace and theme of the video- Either fast cuts to present action and dramatic scenes in the indie music video- or slow smooth cuts to present an emotional or dramatic scene/music video. Contributes to the emotion of the video and the mood of the video. 

 

Effects added over the original footage- Again, filters and colour alterations can be changed in the indie music video to represent it as vintage old and worn, with a faded or discoloured colour. This effect is very common and suggests the video is raw and old.
